Are you really that good?
I was on my way out of the office when I heard someone calling and moments later, K, a twenty-something girl who was in the middle of a breakup came running. “You have to go to Penang. We are handling a function and J need a helper,” she cried amid a string of hiccups and sniffles as she made her way to me.
“I don’t remember seeing my name on the roster. I thought Mr. B assigned you to do that?” I asked curiously. As far as I knew, she was supposed to be helping J. In fact, she was supposed to be there two days ago.
“I know ... but I got tied up here. Now I’m not sure if I can be of any help to J. She seemed to have a lot of prob. with the client. So ... is there any way you can help me? Please?” And as expected, it started. The tears.
“K?”
“We were in Penang when it happened ...”
“What?”
“My boyfriend. We were in Penang when he broke up with me,” she confessed emotionally. “I .. I .. just ...”
“Okay, I tell you what ... I’ll call Penang,” I said and hightailed it out of there, as fast as I could.
Fine, call me heartless .. but I was so tired of listening to the same story over and over again. Personally, she was beginning to annoy me. Seriously! Breakup or no breakup, she should know her priorities. And for someone with so much experience in failed relationships, she should have learned how to handle it by now. Yet, every time it happened, she turned on the water works. Day-in day-out until she found someone new. In the meantime, we became the baby-sitters.
“That was just nasty!” Cat screeched over the phone the moment she heard about it. “Seriously! She’s just a junior exec. with nothing to show and she’s got the guts to do that to you. Jeez!!”
“I know! That’s why I’m so annoyed!”
“I was right. She is bad news. You should fire her! Honestly!”
“What?”
“This is not the first time she pulls this kind of stunt. Okay, maybe to you it is but she has been doing it to the rest of your staff. I think you should talk to A. Remember the guy who quit last month and joined the bank? Well, he is dating a friend of mine and ... oh, you figure it out. I got to go but if you need help, I’m free this weekend and I wouldn’t mind going up north. Better than to go home anyway,” she added and hung up.
In a way, it is sad but Cat wouldn’t be caught dead in her mom’s house on a weekend. The fact that she is the eldest and the only unmarried daughter ... correction .. the only jilted daughter doesn’t sit well with her mother. Which is why she prefers to be as far away as possible whenever she can.
Still, one thing is certain. She has very good insights. She is tough and sharp and she does have a way of seeing the bad in people but she tends to be right .. most of the time.
“Cat was just kidding. I don’t think she’s that bad!” Non said that night as we sat down for dinner at our favourite stall. “I mean, sure ... she’s ambitious ... but I don’t think that she would do something like that! Besides, since when a breakup became your ‘get a special treatment at work’ card?”
“I guess it all depends on who your boss is,” I added slyly.
“You think she dare crosses Mr. B? She’s hardly the sexy, damsel in distress type!” Non protested, playfully brushing away a strand of hair from the corner of her face as she casually checked out a group of guys sitting in front of us.
“What do you think?”
“You tell me,” Non said as she threw a quick, seductive glance at a guy in white sitting in front of us, who was busy chatting with his friends. Fine, he was checking her out too! Oh well ... “By the way, don’t tell me that you’re not aware of what she did!” she added lightly.
“That is besides the point!”
“Aiya! Not everyone work like you lah! Given half a chance, most would slip away if they can!”
I have always believed that the only way to be successful is by working hard. The rest is up to God. While I am not naive, I have always believed that you have to be honest in your work. You have to prove your worth before you can expect any rewards from anyone. And I expect nothing less, from anyone. Guess that is why so many of my execs. quit after a while. Then again, what’s the point of working if you are not contributing to the company?
“I wonder if he’s single?” Non said and let out a long, sad sigh.
“What?”
“The one in white ...”
“God!”
“Aiya! Relaxlah. I’m happy with P. As for K, she’s just a big manipulating tart. Just look at her face!”
“You think so?”
“People like her should work with Cat,” Non added and started to giggle. “Imagine ... her working with Attila the Hun! Wow! I wonder how long she’ll last!”
“You really don’t like her, huh?”
“What’s to like? Everytime I went to your office, she’d butter me up like nobody’s business. I mean, I like compliments, but she makes my skin crawl! And the stories I heard about her ...”
“I know. I’m just not sure if I should get involved ..”
“Now you have a good reason. Still, I wonder how J’s handling things. She is just too paranoid! Really!”
Later that night, I couldn’t help but think about K. Maybe it’s about time she learnt a lesson and just like that, I dialled her number. Someone was about to be reviewed!
